Behavioral disorders in children: When “naughty” behaviors are a sign of a deeper issue

Many parents often complain that their child is “too stubborn,” “disobedient,” or even “likes to break the rules.” However, when these behaviors persist, become increasingly severe, and exceed the normal limits of psychological development, they may no longer be ordinary mischief but a sign of behavioral disorder – one of the common mental health conditions in children and adolescents that is often overlooked.

What is behavioral disorder?

Behavioral disorder (CD) refers to abnormalities in behavior and emotions, causing individuals to act in ways that are oppositional or contrary to what is considered normal. It is a developmental disorder, manifested by a pattern of behaviors that persist over time, often characterized by aggression, violation of social norms, or infringement on the rights of others. These behaviors not only create difficulties in learning and social relationships but also profoundly affect a child’s psychological development and personality.

Not just “mischief”

Children with behavioral disorders often engage in actions that cause harm, both physically and emotionally, to others or themselves. Common manifestations can be divided into four main groups:

  • Physical aggression or threatening others, such as hitting peers, being hostile toward adults, or using words or actions to intimidate.

  • Property destruction, ranging from damaging household items to deliberately causing significant harm.

  • Deceit and theft, such as frequent lying, taking things without permission, or cheating.

  • Violation of age-appropriate social rules, such as skipping school regularly, running away from home without notice, or engaging in behaviors beyond the control of parents and teachers.

Connection with other mental health disorders

An important but often overlooked point is that behavioral disorder (CD) rarely exists in isolation. Children with CD are at high risk of having comorbid mental health conditions, such as:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) – leading to impulsivity and poor behavioral control.

  • Emotional disorders, especially anxiety and depression – which may be hidden behind rebellious behavior.

  • Learning disorders, increasing pressure and potentially prompting negative behaviors as a form of resistance.

The overlap of these disorders creates an interconnected network that influences each other, making the detection and treatment of CD more complex without early and proper intervention.

Understanding is key – not just discipline

Approaching children with behavioral disorders cannot be limited to punishment or reprimands. Unconscious or harsh punishment may deepen feelings of rejection and resistance. Instead, it is crucial to combine psychological support, behavioral education, and medical treatment when necessary.
